Upper Kickapoo Valley Archaeology District Today

Currently, the land in this portion of upper Kickapoo Valley is used primarily for recreation, although some parcels are leased to local farmers for crop production. The varied topography of the area lends itself well to recreations enthusiasts who canoe, ride horses, hike, bike, camp, and snowmobile. A number of designated trails traverse the area.

Archaeological sites in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve represent important aspects of our national heritage. Therefore, archaeological sites and artifacts are protected by state and federal laws. If you discover artifacts on public lands, it is essential that you bring these to the attention of one of the contacts listed to the right. This information will not only assist in learning about the past but in protecting these resources for future generations.

The Kickapoo Reserve Management Board acknowledges that the state and federal lands that comprise the Reserve fall within the ancestral homelands of First Nations people including the Hooçak Nation. We recognize the sovereignty of the Hooçak and other First Nations and will work towards a shared future by continuing to create collaborative opportunities to protect and preserve these lands.
