Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Male has orange and black head,
         brilliant orange throat
  • Dark above with streaked back
  • Large white wing patch
  • Light below with streaked sides
  • Female has paler colors, more
         yellow than orange
  • White wingbars rather than wing patch
  • 5-5.5" (13-14cm.)

Habitat

  • During migration uses deciduous and
       coniferous forests
  • Forest edges

Additional Information

  • Fairly common migrant, rare potential  
        
    resident in extensive conifer
         dominant forests
  • Rare breeder in southern Wisconsin
  • Recorded on several occasions in white pine
         and hemlock in the KVR in summer
  • Found high in the canopy, usually
         heard, not seen
