Identification
- Small songbird
- Male has orange and black head,
brilliant orange throat - Dark above with streaked back
- Large white wing patch
- Light below with streaked sides
- Female has paler colors, more
yellow than orange
- White wingbars rather than wing patch
- 5-5.5" (13-14cm.)
Habitat
- During migration uses deciduous and
coniferous forests - Forest edges
Additional Information
- Fairly common migrant, rare potential
resident in extensive conifer dominant forests
- Rare breeder in southern Wisconsin
- Recorded on several occasions in white pine
and hemlock in the KVR in summer
- Found high in the canopy, usually
heard, not seen
