Identification

  • Very small songbird
  • Grey body and tail, black and white head
  • Black on top of head and on throat ("bib")
  • 5" (14 cm.)

Habitat

  • Forests, shrubby and residential areas

Additional Information

  • Common resident
  • Nests in tree cavities and nest boxes
  • Familiar feeder bird
  • Gregarious except during breeding season
  • Whistles two-note mating song,
         gives "chick-a-dee" call, and many
         other vocalizations
