Blue-headed Vireo -
(Vireo solitarius)

Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Grey green above with blue-grey head
  • Prominent white "spectacles"
  • White below with pale yellow sides
  • White wingbars
  • 5" (13 cm.)

Habitat

  • Uses extensive coniferous or mixed forests for nesting
  • During migration uses a variety of
         woodlands and shrubby habitats

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant, uncommon summer
         resident in northern Wisconsin
  • Usually found alone, sometimes migrates
         with other vireos, warblers
  • Tends to forage for insects at mid-tree height
  • Formerly called "Solitary Vireo"
