Identification

  • Medium-sized blackbird
  • Breeding male all black below with white
         back and rump
  • Yellow on back of head
  • Female and non-breeding male --
         yellowish brown with black stripes
         on head and back
  • Short pinkish bill
  • 7" (18 cm.)

Habitat

  • Open grasslands

Additional Information

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • Wisconsin species of special concern
  • Population in decline
  • Male sings bubbly song on the wing
  • Round trip to winter habitat is
         approximately 12,500 miles (Cornell)
  • Winters in central parts of South America
