Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Grey above, yellow below
  • Eyering
  • White undertail
  • Male has "necklace" of black stripes
  • Black border below eye
  • Female and immature similar --
         lack of or faint necklace
  • 5.25" (13.3 cm.)

Habitat

  • Extensive deciduous, coniferous, or
         mixed forests, usually with a dense
         understory of herbs and
         scattered shrubs.

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant
  • Rare summer resident south
  • Nests in dense forest understory,
         often near water
  • Loud clear song begins with "chip"
