Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Breeding plumage streaky-dark above, white below
  • Yellow crown, black area through eye, black mustache
  • Chestnut area on sides
  • Female has less black on face and less chestnut coloring
  • Fall coloring --lime green above, yellowish wingbars, some chesnut on sides
  • 5" (13cm.)

Habitat

  • Second growth forest and forest edges

Additional Information

  • Common migrant
  • Common summer resident north; rare summer resident south
  • Male's song has accented ending: "please, please, pleased to meetcha"
  • Spends winter in Central America
