Identification

  • Medium size, grey-brown camouflage colors
  • Large head
  • Long pointed wings
  • Underside of wing has dark bar near the end
  • 9.5" (24 cm.)

Habitat

  • Woodland, urban areas

Additional Information

  • Common migrant, fairly common
         summer resident
  • Nests on the ground
  • May use urban buildings with flat
         gravel roofs for nesting
  • Nocturnal, sometimes heard at night
         over towns, calling while hunting
         insects call --nasal buzz
  • Often seen in large numbers during fall  
        
    migration --late August and September
