Identification

  • Small songbird (but one of our
         largest sparrows)
  • Rusty red and grey above
  • Grey face
  • Light below with rusty streaks
  • 7" (18 cm.)

Habitat

  • Shrubby areas, forest edges, and
         residential areas

Additional Information

  • Common migrant
  • Does not breed in Wisconsin
  • Early spring migrant
  • Late fall migrant
  • Rare winter resident
  • Often seen scratching in leaf litter
  • Song a mixture of sweet whistles and
         buzzy notes
