Identification

  • Tall shorebird
  • Spotted brown above, light below
  • Breeding birds have streaking and spotting on neck, chest and sides
  • Long yellow legs, long neck, long bill
  • White rump
  • Larger than similar Lesser Yellowlegs
  • 12" (30.5 cm.)

Habitat

  • Large variety of wetlands

Additional Information

  • Fairly common migrant
  • Active feeder -- sometimes runs in water to catch prey
  • Eats aquatic insects and small fish
  • Gives piercing "tew-tew-tew" call
