Green Heron - (Butorides virescens) Audio
Identification
- Small, stocky heron
- Yellow legs, yellow feet, dark body and top of head, back looks greenish in some light
- Lower part of head and most of neck reddish-brown
- Juvenile has dark body with brown-streaked neck
- 18" (46 cm.)
Habitat
- Wetlands, rivers
- Nests in deciduous trees and conifers, not always near water
Additional Information
- Common migrant and summer resident
- In flight looks crow-like
- Flies with head tucked back and legs extended
- Uses bait to catch fish
