Green Heron - (Butorides virescens)

Identification

  • Small, stocky heron
  • Yellow legs, yellow feet, dark body and top of head, back looks greenish in some light
  • Lower part of head and most of neck reddish-brown
  • Juvenile has dark body with brown-streaked neck
  • 18" (46 cm.)

Habitat

  • Wetlands, rivers
  • Nests in deciduous trees and conifers, not always near water

Additional Information

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • In flight looks crow-like
  • Flies with head tucked back and legs extended
  • Uses bait to catch fish
