Identification

  • Medium-sized woodpecker
  • Black above with white head stripes and
         white wing spots
  • Whitish below
  • White stripe on back, black tail with white
         outer tail feathers
  • Male has small red spot on back of head
  • Juvenile has red on forehead
  • Substantial thick bill
  • 9" (23 cm.)

Habitat

  • Woods, residential areas

Additional Information

  • Common permanent resident
  • Quite shy
  • "Peek" call is sharper and louder than
         that of Downy Woodpecker
  • Has faster drum than Downy Woodpecker
  • Readily uses bird feeders
