Identification
- Small, stocky songbird
- Brown above with white wingbar
- Male has black "sooty" throat, whitish
cheeks, dark bill, grey crown, chestnut nape
- Female dingy brown with light stripe
over eye, dull grey unstreaked breast; dull white underside
- 5-6.25" (13-16 cm.)
Habitat
- Generally near human habitation
- Farmsteads and residential areas
Additional Information
- Abundant resident
- Native to Eurasia and North Africa
- Released 1850 in Central Park, NYC and
has since spread across eastern U.S.
