Identification

  • Summer Males: mostly black face and chin, with reddish or rusty colored nape
  • Winter males light band above eye, less pronounced red on back of neck,subtle black streaks on breast
  • Winter female, similar to male, lacking red color on neck 

Habitat

  • Open areas, fields, prairie

Additional Information

  • Nest in the tundra
  • Circumpolar species
  • Frequent winter species in Wisconsin
  • Often found with Horned Larks and/or Snow Buntings
