Long-eared Owl - (Asio otus)
Identification
- Medium sized owl
- Tall ear tuffs, close together
- Dark vertical stripes through eyes
- Orangish face coloring
- Dark, long underbody streaks
- 13-16" (33-40 cm.)
Habitat
- Dense woods, near open areas
Additional Information
- More common in WI during winter months
- Rare occurrence in the Reserve
- Roosts in trees during days, hunts open areas at night
- Colors similar to great horned owl, but not as large
- Strictly nocturnal
