Identification

  • Large duck
  • Male has green head, dark brown breast,
         grey body, yellow bill
  • Female is mottled brown, orange bill
  • Non breeding male and juveniles resemble
         female
  • 23" (58 cm.)

Habitat

  • Wetlands, lakes, streams

Additional Information

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • Hardy, may be found in winter if there is open water
  • Wisconsin hunters bag more mallards than
         any other duck species
