Identification
- Large raptor
- Adults dark above with fine grey barring below, dark head with broad light stripe above the eye
- Juveniles brown above, lighter below with brown streaks
- 21-25" (53-64 cm.)
Habitat
- Northern forests
- Variety of habitats for hunting in winter
Additional Information
- Uncommon migrant, rare winter resident southern Wisconsin
- Some winters more found in southern areas ("irruptions")
- Hunts birds and some mammals, including rabbits and squirrels
- Will chase prey on foot when necessary
