  • Small songbird with crossbill beak
  • Male coloring varies from deep red to
         reddish-yellow
  • Dark wing and tails
  • Female grey with dull green
  • 5.25-6.5" (13-16 cm)

Habitat

  • Mixed coniferous forest

Additional Information

  • Uncommon, irregular winter visitor
  • Wisconsin species of special concern
  • Unique cross tip bill design allows
         eating of seed from pine cone
  • Breeds at various times of year,
         depending on cone production
