Identification

  • Medium-sized woodpecker
  • Black and white barring on back,
         wings and tail
  • White below with varying pinkish
         area on belly
  • Male has red on top of head from
         beak to neck
  • Female has less red--red color
         only on the nape
  • 9" (23 cm.)

Habitat

  • Woodland, residential areas with trees

Additional Information

  • Fairly common resident in southern
         two-thirds of Wisconsin
  • Vocalizes year-round
  • Population increasing
  • Has been expanding northward
  • Eats insects, fruit, acorns, seeds
  • Male guards territory year-round
