Identification

  • Medium-sized woodpecker
  • Bright red head and neck, black upper
         back, white rump
  • White underneath, wings black with large
         white area
  • Males and females look alike
  • Young birds have dark heads
  • 9" (23 cm.)

Habitat

  • Deciduous woods, especially oak,
         woodland edges, open areas with
         a few trees

  • Formerly common migrant and summer
         resident
  • Occasional winter resident
  • Wisconsin species of special concern
  • Population in decline
  • Nests in tree cavities
  • Diet varied; prefers acorns or other
         nuts in winter
