- Bright red head and neck, black upper
back, white rump - White underneath, wings black with large
white area - Males and females look alike
- Young birds have dark heads
- 9" (23 cm.)
Habitat
- Deciduous woods, especially oak,
woodland edges, open areas with
a few trees
Additional Information
- Formerly common migrant and summer
resident - Occasional winter resident
- Wisconsin species of special concern
- Population in decline
- Nests in tree cavities
- Diet varied; prefers acorns or other
nuts in winter
