Identification

  • Large raptor
  • Brown above, light below
  • Some have spotted belly band
  • Adults have rusty red tail
  • Juveniles have dark banded tail
  • Plumage is variable
  • 22" (56 cm.)

Habitat

  • Open country
  • Forest edges

  • Common migrant, common permanent resident
  • Often seen soaring
  • Hunts from a perch,--utility pole or tree branch
