Identification
- Medium-sized songbird
- Male all black with red shoulder patch
- Female brown with thick stripes all over
- 8.75" (22 cm.)
Habitat
- Wetlands, open areas
- Roadsides, weedy fields
Additional Information
- Abundant migrant and summer resident
- Defends nest, often attacking large animals, including humans
- Each pair raises two or three broods a season, building a separate nest for each
- After nesting season, congregates in large
flocks in wetlands - Abundant KVR breeding bird
