Identification

  • Large chicken-like bird
  • Male: mottled bronze with long pointed tail, back of neck and throat green with white stripe below, bare red skin patches around eye, ear tufts behind red patch
  • Female: smaller, mottled brown, long pointed tail
  • 21-33" (53-84 cm.)

Habitat

  • Field edges, hedgerows, roadsides,    grasslands
  • Open country with some cover

Additional Information

  • Introduced species, originally from Asia
  • Needs upland grasslands for nesting
  • Population is affected by severe winters
