Identification
- Medium-sized songbird
- Male black and white with rose-red
triangular patch on breast, red underwings, white patches on wing
- Female brown above, white below with
brown streaks, white wingbars, white line over eye, yellow under wing
- 8" (20 cm.)
Habitat
- Deciduous and mixed forest
- Residential areas
Additional Information
- Common migrant and summer resident
- Song similar to that of American Robin
- Sweet melodius song often interrupted with metallic "chink" call note
- Flimsy nest -- so thin that eggs can be seen through the nest sides
- Male and female share incubation duties
