Identification

  • Distinct yellow eye
  • Non breeding/migrant males: rust colored
         feather edges
  • Breeding males shiny black
  • Females more brown than black
  • 8.5" (11 cm.)

Habitat

  • Wooded wetlands
  • Ponds and lakes edges

Additional Information

  • Populations in rapid decline
  • Flocks with Grackles, Red-winged blackbirds and European Starlings
  • Holds tail up when ground foraging
  • Known to occasionally feed on other birds, but usually prefers insects
