Identification

  • Small dark bird with short yellow bill
  • Brown above, grey on neck and chest,
  • Black area around beak
  • Greenish legs, big toes
  • 8.75" (22 cm.)

Habitat

  • Shallow marsh

Additional Information

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • Secretive, easily heard, less easily seen
  • Most commonly known call -- a descending whinny, often in reponse to other loud noises
  • Nests are often built with overhanging
         canopy
