Identification
- Large dark bird with iridescent feathers,
long bare legs -
Male's head and neck bare with bluish
color, red wattles, feather tuft hanging from breast ("beard") - Female duller coloring and smaller
- 37-46" (94-117 cm.)
Habitat
- Deciduous woodland,
- Forages in agricultural fields
Additional Information
- Abundant permanent resident
- Extirpated in Wisconsin in 1800's,
restoration began in 1976 - Male struts, fans tail, and gobbles in
courtship display - Spends most of daytime on the ground,
roosts in trees
