Identification

  • Very small songbird
  • Dark brown with barring on belly
  • Pale line above eye
  • Very short tail, often held upright
  • 4" (10 cm.)

Habitat

  • Mixed coniferous-hardwood forest, streams

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant,
  • Uncommon to rare summer resident north and central WI
  • Has been documented nesting
         in the Reserve
  • Prefers areas with dead wood--fallen logs
         with woody debris
  • Nests and forages near water
  • Song is long, complex, and melodious
