  • Fairly long, straight bill, yellow
         lower mandible
  • Long tail with white spots below
  • Rufous outer wing color (visible in flight)
  • 11" (28 cm.)

Habitat

  • Deciduous forests

  • Fairly common migrant and
         summer resident
  • Wisconsin species of special concern
  • Population in decline
  • Secretive, more often heard than seen
  • Breeding onset tied to food supply of
         caterpillars
