Common Goldeneye -
(Bucephala clangula) 

Identification

  • A diving duck
  • Males: green head, large white dot on cheek between eye and bill, black back, otherwise mostly white
  • Females: light grey back with white color on neck and underside, brown head

Habitat

  • Lakes, ponds near forest edge

Additional Information

  • Late fall migrant
  • Arrives early in spring (as soon as the ice is out)
  • Uncommon migrant in the upper Kickapoo watershed.
